Of chicken pox and four year olds

Assalamu 'Alaikum

Of chicken pox and four year olds

When Kakak the eldest 8 year old girl had it last week we managed to garner some form of discipline. She did stay in her room much of the time although not without tears and tantrums questioning the injustice of life. Zahir and Adila can follow Papa everywhere including Mydin and a Viva Palestine do in Bangsar whilst she had to stay in her room eating biccies and doing maths exercises.
The doctor said no school for one week and we figured that should also be the length of her exile since her 7 year old sister and 4 year old brother hasn’t had the honour of making acquaintance with these little fiends yet. The quarantine only lasted 5 days, on day 6 she was everywhere the family went but a sad tearful distance away; though mama sleeping with her at night does soothe the pain a little. We contemplated what it would be like if Zahir were to catch the bug, will we succeed in getting him to agree to be quarantined. Everybody knew the answer to that; it will be probably easier to negotiate the return of Pulau Batu Putih from Singapore. We reckoned we probably have to quarantine Adila instead and let the boy have free play of the house.

Zahir caught the bug yesterday and Papa had to rush back from academia to take him to the Paedi remembering his advice on the importance of getting the anti viral drug early to curtail the spread of the sores. For Kakak earlier the medication reached almost RM200 worrying Papa how the rural folks will cope when their kids catch the same bug. Since the whole world are informed how affluent Malaysia is hopefully the PM’s 1Malaysia clinics will distribute it free to the populace. Sime Darby’s RM1.5 billion divide by RM200 per shot hmm…..anyway that’s another story. Talking about chicken pox Papa recalled how he caught it during primary school days and how an elder brother jealous of the special treatment Papa was getting rubbed his arms against Papa’s so that he too will get the illness. Mum did overdo it with the Campbell soups and the orang puteh fruits I supposed. To his delight he did catch it and joined me in quarantine. Today he’s a cabinet minister; I’m glad they did not make him Minister of Health.

The pox is doing the round in schools. Zahir’s cousin as far away as Kemaman has also caught it.Zahir will probably miss the Kindergarten’s Sportsday this Saturday. That’s another negotiation we have to handle; the going price made clear to me is a scooter like the one he had in Riyadh.

Wassalam,
Zahid
